Subclass 462
This visa subclass allows applicant from eligible countries to travel to and work in Australia. It has an initial duration of 1 year, but if applicants undertake specific work, for a specific amount of time, then the visa can be extended for up to 3 years.
You will also be allowed to study for up to 4 months. It was designated for young travelers and backpackers to take the opportunity to work in Australia during their stay. You will be able to enter and leave Australia multiple times.
Common requirements
- Have a passport from an eligible country
- Be of the age of 18 – 30 years old (inclusive). Eligible passport holders the age limit has increased to 35
- Have the appropriate level of education (defined by the country)
- Have at least a functional level of English knowledge
- If required, have a letter of support from your country
- Have the financial capacity to support yourself while in Australia
- Meet health and character requirements
Visitor Visa
Subclass 600
This visa allows travelers to visit family and friends in Australia or just for tourism purposes.
This visa subclass has a few different streams including:
Tourist streams: applying inside of Australia and applying outside of Australia.
When applying from outside of Australia the visa duration may be up to 1 year, but your stay in Australia can be limited to 3, 6 or 12 months.
When applying from inside of Australia you may have a duration of 12 months visa and may be allowed to stay for the entire period.
Sponsored family stream: designated for Australian Citizens or Permanent residents in Australia to sponsor their family to visit them. The duration is up to 12 months.
Business Visitor Stream: for people seeking to visit Australia for a short period of time for business purposes
Approved Destination Stream: exclusively for People’s Republic of China (excluding SARs) to travel to Australia as tourists as part of a tour group
Frequent Traveler Stream: exclusively for citizens of the People’s Republic of China who visit Australia frequently for business purposes or personal reasons.

Subclass 651
It allows travellers from certain countries to travel to Australia for a period of up to 12 months. Applicants must be outside of Australia. Eligible countries are:
Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Republic of San Marino, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom – British Citizen and Vatican City.
Common requirements
- Have the financial capacity to support yourself while in Australia
- Be a genuine visitor and have genuine intention to stay in Australia temporarily
- Meet health and character requirements
- Be a holder of a passport from an eligible country
